Makoto Yukimura, the creator of the popular manga series Vinland Saga, has confirmed that a third season of the anime adaptation is not currently in production. Yukimura made the announcement on October 22, 2026, in a direct reply to a fan on X, who inquired about any positive news regarding a third installment. The author apologized, stating he had “no good news” and that the project is “not currently in progress.”

This update follows a high volume of fan mail sent to Kodansha, prompting Yukimura to address the status of the anime's continuation. It is important to note that this statement does not indicate the third season has been canceled or shelved. Vinland Saga Season 3 has never received a formal announcement or production greenlight, despite recurring speculation among fans.

Fan Expectations and Previous Rumors

Fan expectations for a third season initially surged after the conclusion of Season 2 in June 2023. At that time, chief animation director Takahiko Abiru shared celebratory artwork featuring the Roman numeral “III” and the phrase “Thorfinn’s journey will continue.” However, staff members later clarified that this post was not an official announcement. Similar rumors circulated in January 2026, which led Yukimura to state on social media that he had not received any information regarding a continuation.

The first season of Vinland Saga, animated by WIT Studio, premiered in July 2019. Twin Engine officially announced Season 2 eighteen months later in July 2021, with MAPPA taking over animation production. The second season was released in 2023, four years after the debut of Season 1. More than three years have passed since the second season concluded, and an official confirmation for a third season remains elusive.

The source material for potential future seasons is fully available, as Yukimura concluded Vinland Saga’s 20-year serialization run in July 2025, totaling 220 chapters across 29 volumes.
